LIFE IS CRAZY!

So, I had my junior recital this week. It went very well. It was not perfect, but I was very pleased with how I did. I am so grateful that so many friends and family came and supported me. I felt like the most popular person in the entire world.   :-)

Thank you to everyone who came! You are all FANTASTIC!!!

My First French Poem

Here is a poem I recently wrote for French class. It pretty much describes how I feel right now.

En Automne by Kirsten

En automne, il fait frais
Orange, rose, et jaune
Je suis calme
Les feuilles tombent
Je fais une promenade
Il y a du vent
Le ciel est gris
Je m’assieds solitaire
Les arbres soufflent
Je l'attends
Je m’ennuie de lui.

McKell

I wrote this story a long time ago and meant to publish it, but I didn't. So here it is for you now. It is the story of my dog, McKell.

People always say to write a story while it is still fresh in your mind, but sometimes you can't do it. This is one of those stories. I tried to write it shortly after McKell's death, but it was too hard. Now, a few months later, I hope I am ready.

It was October 29, 1997, and we were at Chuck-a-Rama eating dinner for my twelfth birthday. A friend, Casey Ellingson, was at home watching our dog, McKayla, who was ready to have puppies any day. The waitress came up to our table, and said that we had a call. It was Casey, McKayla was having her puppies! We finished eating extremely quickly and rushed home. It was a crazy night! I don't remember for sure if there were one or two puppies by the time we arrived, but I do remember when the first female arrived. The Pickering sisters had a list of names that they were considering for the pups and one of the names was McKell. I knew when the first female came that her name was going to be McKell, and she would be mine one day.

McKell was actually the Pickering's dog. There ended up being two females in the litter and Pickerings kept both of them. About two years after McKell's birth, on Saturday, July 8, 2000, I finally got the courage to call Ava and ask if I could buy McKell. I called and to my disbelief, Ava said I could have her. She said, "She really is your dog anyway." I was the happiest girl on earth.

Let me tell you a little about McKell. She was, or at least she thought she was the top dog at our house. She was a princess who loved to be comfortable. McKell thought she owned my bed; she would go to my room all the time and sleep on the bed. She loved a belly rub. McKell would fall down on her back for anyone if she thought she would get a rub out of it. McKell had the softest fur; I could pet her all day. She loved to go and visit Grandma and Grandpa Stenquist. I am pretty sure this is because Grandpa would always sneak her food under the table. Her nickname was Fred. McKell looked like her beautiful mother, McKayla. They both were pineapple heads, which means there was hardly any white on their faces or that their faces were all golden colored. (Pineapple head is a term created by Rebecca Grossman.) McKell had a fitted coat. She loved her brother Joel and always took care of him, especially as he got older. He was also her favorite playmate. She would clean his eye when it was full of drainage and take naps with him. McKell also thought her pills from the vet were treats. This made it super easy for me to give her pills to her. McKell, like any other dog, loved food!

McKell was always watching out for me. She loved to follow me everywhere. As long as we were together she was happy After my foot reconstruction surgery she was always close by my side. I knew that she was there to take care of me.

McKell died quickly and quietly on Saturday, September 17, 2011, early in the morning. A few months earlier she had been to the vet; he had diagnosed her with a heart murmur. She did not show any outward signs of slowing down. On Wednesday, September 14, 2011, McKell had a bloody nose; it wasn't too bad so we didn't worry about it. But then on Thursday she still had a bloody nose and it had gotten worse during the night. My mom and I decided that we should take McKell to the vet. I scheduled an appointment for Friday. My mom took her because I had to work that day. When I got home I was told the very unhappy news. The bloody nose usually means a couple things, but to confirm either of them would require thousands of dollars in vet bills. Because McKell was so old even if they did all the tests to find out what was wrong there was probably nothing they could do to help her get better. Apparently, most animals in this situation end up getting put down because the owners get tired of cleaning up the bloody mess.  That night McKell took a turn for the worse. She was having difficulty breathing and was coughing most of the night. The next morning I decided that it was time to put her down. Our neighbor Warren Hess, who is a vet, came over. He was wonderful about the whole thing; I was a wreck. McKell went very peacefully in my arms. Warren said that her heart was working very hard to keep her going. My dad then went out and dug a hole for her to be buried in. It was one of those days when I felt like my heart was being ripped from my chest.

My personal belief . . .McKell waited for me to get a new dog before she passed. Not long after I got Kate, about 2 months, McKell passed away. I think she wanted to be sure that I was taken care of before she left me.

I will always be grateful for McKell. She was a wonderful dog and a best friend.

Wednesday

Well, here I am sitting in the library . . . studying (cough, cough). I should be studying, but yet again I am typing a super boring post.

So today I had to teach a voice lesson in front of my vocal pedagogy class. So you understand this is absolutely terrifying!!! I taught in front of the vocal department head and my peers. Some of my peers are so intimidating. They look at you as if you are dinner . . . I am not even joking. Then there are the ones, who are so kind and supportive; I love this kind of peer. Well, I wasn't amazing. I am the first to admit I need lots of practice, but I came out with some great ideas. In the end, after all the horror, it was an awesome experience. I learned so much about myself. First thing being that I need more confidence. I also discovered some great new exercises to use with my students. I am so grateful my sister, Maria, was willing to come and sing in front of a bunch of voice majors. She did awesome!

I hope that wasn't too sporadic. I struggle to explain my self at times, but there it is. Bye, bye!

P.S. And on top of all this . . . I slipped and fell in the shower today, and it really hurt!

I'm back . . .

Well . . . it has been a very long time. So much has happened for me to tell you about . . .

First, I am back in school. This is shocking news, I know. It has only taken me a few years (3 years) to return. I am at Weber State University studying Vocal Pedagogy. This is where you say, "What the . . . ?" I will explain. Here is the definition straight from wikipedia, "Vocal pedagogy is the study of the art and science of voice instruction. It is used in the teaching of singing and assists in defining what singing is, how singing works, and how proper singing technique is accomplished." I absolutely love vocal pedagogy.  I have learned so much about teaching and the voice. It has been amazing! I even went to the cadaver lab to see the different body parts that make up the voice. (I didn't even pass out; I am so proud of myself!) I will never go back by the way. I couldn't eat for 24 hours after seeing cut up bodies. Learning about singing has opened my eyes up to so many possibilities; it is fantastic!

Next, y'all remember my adorable puppy Kate? Well, she was in her first three obedience trials and two rally trials this past year. She was brilliant. We took home two first place ribbons and two second place ribbons. I was so pleased. We are now preparing for out next show in May.

I am also in the opera at WSU (Weber State University). The opera is Mozart's The Magic Flute, or in German, Die Zauberflöte. Please don't get too excited. I am only in the chorus, and will probably get a whole ten maybe fifteen minutes of stage time, but I am so grateful for the experience. The opera will be March 28-30 at 7pm in the Browning Center and a matinee on Saturday at 2pm. If you are in the area please come and support me.

Well, that is all I can think of for now. I hope I caught up a little. I am sorry that I was such a slacker. Thanks for visiting!!!

New Puppy!!!

Ok ladies and gents, here is the newest addition to my family. Her name is Kate, and she is 10 weeks old.  Kate's right eye did not fully develop so she blind in that eye, but do you think it slows her down? Not a bit. She loves to play and keep me up all night. Kate is a howler! She loves to go to grandma's house while I am at work, and I am afraid that grandma might not give her back. Her mother is a seizure alert dog named Ali, and her father, Cache, is confirmation perfection. I love her so much and am thrilled to call her mine. I have to thank Cindy and Shanna Wilkinson who took such wonderful care of Kate during her first few weeks of life. She is wonderful!

The Story of the CD

The year was 1998 my best friend’s name was Kelsie Ainsworth; to this day, thirteen years later, we are still BFFs. We loved to pass notes during school. One day along with a note she passed me a tape of songs. I loved this tape. Each song told me how important and loved I was. In 2000 my family moved to West Kaysville, and I lost the tape during the move. I was devastated, but after awhile I forgot about the tape.  One day, years later, while going through some papers I found a list of all the songs that were on the tape. I was so excited! I decided that I wanted to make a CD for Kelsie for Christmas. I took the list of songs and found them all on iTunes; I was not able to find all the same artists. Some of the artists I found were not great, but the words of the songs were the most important part for me. I had all the songs ready for the CD. Then I thought I should add a few more songs to the list. I picked some songs from my neighbors album, and one other that I discovered during college.  I added maybe four or five new songs and made the CD. I mailed the CD to Kelsie for Christmas. She loved it! I have since given it to my good friend Tatiana, and made a copy for myself. When Kelsie gave this CD to me it meant so much. The songs are about love, friendship and trust. The words of each song were just what I needed to hear. I am so grateful to have Kelsie as a friend. She has always been there for me even through the tough times. Kelsie calls and texts me regularly just to see how I am doing. Could you ask for more in a friend?

WAGON TRAIN

Ok so I have to say that I love going on the wagon train every year. Everyone is so nice, and the food is delicious! So on the first day my mom, dad, and I went on our own little trail; it was so much fun. Dad let me drive the horses for the first time, and I loved that. The second day we rode through this beautiful green valley that was covered with little streams. I have included some pictures and more will be on the way!

The Name of the Game

Today's theme is random so I will just give you a list of the things I have been up to.

1) I finished The Virgin Suicides. Interesting book, I don't know if I would read it again; it is sad.

2) I got the new white iPhone!!! I love it!

3) I am sick. An upper respiratory infection is the worst! I miss the days when I could breath.

4) Sandbagging & flooding! I have the best neighbors!

It has definitely been a week. I am so grateful for all the support I have from my family and neighbors! They sure do make life exciting. I love how everyone is smiling! Chat with you another day!

THE BEST DAY EVER!!!

Oh my goodness, today is the best day ever!!! I just got Microsoft Office back on my work computer. I have been using Open Office for almost a year now, and I hate it. I know, yes, I am brought up by that generation that has used Microsoft Office since childhood. I am biased; I even took a class in college on using Microsoft Office. It is so easy to use. Open Office might be free, but I am telling you I will never use it again. Ah, it felt good to get that off my chest.

Walking!

Good news! I am walking again after seven and a half weeks of crutches. Sometimes I thought that this day would never come. It is so nice to get to wear shoes again. I think we don't realize how much we do something until we can't do it; I am so grateful for the ability to walk. I am so grateful that spring is coming!

A New Day

I was wondering what to write about today. Not much has happened between yesterday and today. I had my voice lesson. Sometimes I wonder if I should keep singing; I have such a hard time hearing what sounds right and what is crap. The good news is that I can tell when I am really crappy. I am always afraid of the high notes. It is not so much that they are high; it is are they actually going to have that perfect tone. Will they make the audience cringe? I got two new songs. One has a powerful moment that I am just not prepared for. I don't know if I am ready .

My coworkers and I decided to order pizza for lunch today. It was recommended that we order stuffed crust pizza from Pizza Hut. HOLY COW!!! I cannot even describe the wonder that is stuffed crust pizza. I painted my nails yesterday, pink; they look great. That's all for now folks!
